Long-term fogged windows are a wake-up call – the health of residents may be at risk. Above-normal levels of water vapor in the air are often revealed by fogged windows and are associated with excessive levels of other pollutants, such as carbon dioxide – CO₂, poisonous carbon monoxide – CO, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), allergens.

Wet windshields – what to do?

Krzysiek has a problem with wet corners of the glazing packages for days, even weeks, without drying completely. Most likely, Krzysiek has malfunctioning ventilation in his property, probably caused by a lack of sufficient fresh air flow through the window seals and a lack of intensive ventilation by opening them during the day.

We recommend opening the window ajar for several minutes to the effect, i.e. until the corners dry out, or ensuring a constant flow of fresh air (for example, through ventilators). If the recommendation does not have the desired effect, it is worth using the knowledge and experience of TERMOCENT staff. In a properly ventilated and heated room, the problem of long-term condensation in the corners of glazing packages should not occur, especially at temperatures between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius.

When are wet glass corners not a problem?

Short-term condensation in the corners of the windows may be caused by a drop in the temperature outside. If the moisture dries up after a few hours, there is probably no problem with the quality of the windows or ventilation. Mold on the walls – how to get rid of the problem?

Paul has a problem with the occurrence of black mold efflorescence in the corners of the walls. He systematically ventilates the premises and unseals the windows, but this does not bring any improvement and the mold returns even after its mechanical or chemical removal. Assessment of the real cause of Paul’s mold and mildew formation problem requires thermal imaging diagnostics of the technical parameters of the property’s envelope, performed by TERMOCENT.

It is important to remember that constantly being in a poorly ventilated or well-ventilated environment with a high content of mold and fungal spores can cause pulmonological, or oncological, complications, i.e. allergies, inflammation and cancer. A common reason for reluctance to ventilate is misinterpreted relative humidity (the percentage of maximum water vapor that can dissolve in 1m³ of air at a given temperature).

Few people know that the same hygrometer reading (relative humidity), at different ambient temperatures, means a different content, expressed in grams, of the gaseous form of water in the air. To put it simply: the lower the ambient temperature, the less water vapor can dissolve at maximum in 1m³ of air. The physical phenomenon described above is an explanation of where condensed water vapor appears on cooled objects.

Condensation on windshields – how to remedy it?

Andrew noticed that water vapor condensed on his windows for a long time. As a solution to this problem, he used commonly known moisture absorbers, resulting in less condensation. Andrew is satisfied because he gets rid of the absorbed water every now and then, and condensation occurs less frequently on windows and wall corners.

To our knowledge, Andrew actually reduces the water vapor content in the air – and it is not harmful – leaving carbon dioxide in excess: CO₂, carbon monoxide – CO, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), allergens and others. The presence of these harmful and toxic compounds in excess we cannot sensory or organoleptically determine.

On the other hand, excess water vapor associated with inadequate ventilation can be found precisely through condensation in the corners of the glazing packages at the windows most commonly found in our homes. Therefore, we advise against the use of moisture absorbers in lieu of more intensive ventilation of rooms. On the other hand, combining them with proper ventilation will not harm anyone.
